Privacy Policy

Hillside is a tool for capturing the small facts of running a household — groceries, meals, notes, schedules — and filing them somewhere you and the people you live with can find them. To do that, we store the things you give us. This page explains what we collect, why, and the control you have over it. We’ve tried to write it like a human. Where it gets specific, it’s because we’d rather be clear than vague.

The short version: we store what you capture so the product can work. We send your captures to our AI provider to sort them. We don’t sell your data and we don’t run ads. You can see, correct, and delete everything Hillside knows — that control is the whole point of the product, not a footnote.

What we collect

• Account info — your email address, and authentication details needed to sign you in.
• What you capture — the text, voice-to-text, and images you put into Hillside, and the structured records it becomes (inventory items, recipes, notes, and similar). This is the core of the service.
• Household data — which household you belong to and who else is in it, so shared state works.
• Usage and diagnostic data — basic logs and metrics (e.g. when captures happen, errors) used to keep the service running and improve routing quality.
• Cookies — a single session cookie to keep you signed in. We don’t use advertising or third-party tracking cookies.

How we use it

We use your information only to provide and improve Hillside:

• to file your captures into the right place (see AI processing below);
• to show you and your household the shared state;
• to operate, secure, and debug the service.

We do not sell your personal information, and we don’t use your household content to advertise to you.

AI processing

Sorting a capture into the right place is done by an AI model. To do this, the content you capture is sent to our AI provider, Anthropic, for classification and extraction, and the result is returned to Hillside. We send only what’s needed to process the capture. Nothing a capture produces enters your trusted records silently: when Hillside isn’t sure, it flags the item as Needs review so you see and confirm it before it’s treated as fact.

Service providers (subprocessors)

We rely on a small set of vendors to run Hillside. They process data on our behalf, under their own security and privacy commitments:

• Anthropic — AI classification and extraction of captures.
• Fly.io — application hosting and database.
• Tigris / AWS S3 — image and backup storage.

Sharing within a household

Hillside is multiplayer by design. Anyone in your household can see and edit the shared state of that household. Only share a household with people you intend to share that information with.

Your control over your data

Because Hillside is built around shared, inspectable understanding, you can:

• See everything stored — there’s no hidden memory.
• Correct anything Hillside got wrong, including via the Needs review gate before it’s trusted.
• Delete items. Deletion in Hillside is a hard delete — when you remove something, it’s gone, not archived.
• Export your data, or ask us for a copy.

California privacy rights

If you’re a California resident, the CCPA/CPRA gives you the right to know what personal information we collect, to access and delete it, to correct it, and to not be discriminated against for exercising these rights. We do not sell or “share” personal information as those terms are defined under California law. Submit requests to support@hellohillside.com.

Data retention

We keep your information for as long as your account is active. When you delete an item, it’s removed (hard delete). When you close your account, we delete your content within a reasonable period, except where we must retain something to comply with law or resolve disputes. Backups age out on their normal rotation.

Security

We protect your data with encryption in transit and access controls appropriate to a service of this size. No system is perfectly secure, and we can’t guarantee absolute security — but we treat your household data as something to be careful with.

Children

Hillside is not directed to children, and we don’t knowingly create accounts for anyone under 13. Adults may record information about their children (for example, kids’ food preferences); that data belongs to the adult’s household account.

Changes

We’ll update this page when our practices change, and revise the date at the top. Material changes will be flagged in the app.
